Inflation and Welfare in Long-Run Equilibrium with Firm Dynamics
We analyze the welfare cost of inflation in a model with cash-in-advance constraints and an endogenous distribution of establishments' productivities. Inflation distorts aggregate productivity through firm entry dynamics. The model is calibrated to the United States economy and the long-run equilibrium properties are compared at low and high inflation. We find that, when the period over which the cash-in-advance constraint is binding is one quarter, an annual inflation rate of 10 percent leads to a decrease in the steady-state average productivity of roughly 0.5 percent compared to the optimum's steady-state. This decrease in productivity is not innocuous: it leads to a doubling of the welfare cost of inflation.firm dynamics, productivity, inflation, welfare
The Emergence of New and Successful Export Activities in Brazil: Four Case Studies from the Manufacturing and the Agricultural Sector
This paper investigates the emergence of new successful export activities in Brazil through the analysis of four industry case studies: furniture, swimwear, soybeans and grapes. Extensive secondary data research was done to study industries’ historical development and to understand the elements that affect the discovery of new export-oriented activities and their diffusion in the economy. Detailed analysis was carried out to identify the role of public sector in the discovery and diffusion process, if any. Comparison of the four experiences show different models of diffusion and demonstrate how barriers to discovery, spillovers and institutions responses varied dramatically among the cases. The paper tries to extract some general conclusions concerning the role of pioneer firms, external actors and public sector institutions. Some lessons learned are presented aiming to help policymakers to design positive policy interventions in Latin America countries.
Reconstrução e classificação de sequências de ADN desconhecidas
The continuous advances in DNA sequencing technologies and techniques
in metagenomics require reliable reconstruction and accurate classification
methodologies for the diversity increase of the natural repository while contributing
to the organisms' description and organization. However, after
sequencing and de-novo assembly, one of the highest complex challenges
comes from the DNA sequences that do not match or resemble any biological
sequence from the literature. Three main reasons contribute to this
exception: the organism sequence presents high divergence according to the
known organisms from the literature, an irregularity has been created in the
reconstruction process, or a new organism has been sequenced. The inability
to efficiently classify these unknown sequences increases the sample
constitution's uncertainty and becomes a wasted opportunity to discover
new species since they are often discarded.
In this context, the main objective of this thesis is the development and
validation of a tool that provides an efficient computational solution to
solve these three challenges based on an ensemble of experts, namely
compression-based predictors, the distribution of sequence content, and
normalized sequence lengths. The method uses both DNA and amino acid
sequences and provides efficient classification beyond standard referential
comparisons. Unusually, it classifies DNA sequences without resorting directly
to the reference genomes but rather to features that the species biological
sequences share. Specifically, it only makes use of features extracted
individually from each genome without using sequence comparisons.
RFSC was then created as a machine learning classification pipeline that
relies on an ensemble of experts to provide efficient classification in metagenomic
contexts. This pipeline was tested in synthetic and real data, both
achieving precise and accurate results that, at the time of the development
of this thesis, have not been reported in the state-of-the-art. Specifically, it
has achieved an accuracy of approximately 97% in the domain/type classification.

Numerical Study of a drag reduction system for a formula student car
This dissertation focuses on utilising computational fluid dynamics tools to achieve an
optimized Drag Reduction System configuration from an existent design of a Formula
Student car rear wing. The considered rear wing is a multi-element wing with 3 airfoils
that produces a considerable fraction of the car’s total aerodynamic downforce. This
requires a downforce/drag forces trade-off that impacts the performance of the car in
each segment of the race track. The introduction of a Drag Reduction System requires
that the system is well design to avoid adding complexity without considerable benefits.
A typical formula student DRS concept is applied where the two most rear-er flaps are
rotated in order to decrease or increase drag. Achieving a good DRS system through the
best possible configuration in terms of angle of attack of the flaps, as well as the center of
rotation position was considered to have the potential to be a considerable improvement
to the cars’ performance. In the present work StarCCM+ is used to simulate the external
aerodynamics of the isolated rear wing. Simulation macros are developed in order get a
better understanding of the overall force mapping of all lift and drag forces on the current
rear wing configuration. Through a first force mapping study is in seen how the second
flap’s angle of attack has more influence in the overall forces on the wing. The lift and drag
mapping showed the expected close proximity between this separate force components.
Iteratively, the best configuration in terms of angles and centers of rotation of the flap is
achieved. Through a 2D analysis of the isolated airfoil it is seen that the lowest drag angle
of attack is about 0. On a first iteration of optimization process the first movable flap
sits at 0 while for the second flap shows that a 6 angle of attack is preferable in order
to reduce drag. It is seen that varying the centers of rotation also has impact the force
values although it is less than varying the angles of attack. The combination of the angles
of attack study with the center of rotation showed that the preferable minimum drag
configuration sits at a f lap1 = 0, a f lap2 = 6, a CORf lap1 = 20% and a CORf lap2 = 0%.
The tools developed through this dissertation are left to the team in such a way that it
makes it faster to achieve the iterative study of the DRS system configuration.
No
A combinação
Digital forensic analysis is an area generally restricted to a small number of individuals.
This happens due to the complexity of entry to the area due to a small
user base, few and out-of-date software restricting the more advanced software
behind paywalls and licenses. Unfortunately, due to the small user base, open-source
projects take a long time to be updated and fall behind software present in other
areas.
More and more crimes are being committed using digital means, which means
that the ability to analyze the physical computer and its components is becoming
increasingly more important. The Volatility Framework is used for the analysis of
one of these components, the RAM. But the currently available software is far from
perfect due to a lack of graphical interface and other functionalities that have come
to be the norm for software in the year 2021. This means that the end-user needs
to be even more experience to use this software.
This thesis has as its main objective the development of a graphical interface to
the software Volatility. This graphical interface takes as its main objective to ease
the usage of Volatility as much as possible. This is accomplished by introducing
automatic commands, reports, more accessible exports, integrations, functionalities
that had to be done outside of the tool, among many others. This is done to help
the final user that might have very little knowledge and do a complete RAM images
analysis without having to use any external tool.
The results obtained by the development of the software allow the proof of
effectiveness, in levels of time and usefulness, of this tool with new users of this
software and this area, and with more experienced users
Design and fabrication of silver microelectrodes for biomedical applications
Cancer is one of the major causes of mortality and morbidity in developed countries worldwide. It is usually preceded by precancerous changes and its early detection, especially at the dysplasia stage, is one of the major goals in modern medicine, as the chances of a successful treatment are increased at this stage. In-vitro studies have demonstrated that pH changes in both the intracellular and extracellular environment of a tissue can be correlated with tumor cell proliferation at different stages. However, in-situ measurements of the electrochemical properties of cells can be challenging and require complex or costly equipment.
In this thesis, the ambition is to develop a novel tool for in-vitro and in-situ cell diagnosis, based on solid-state micrometric electrodes with pH sensing capabilities. This system should, optimally, be compatible and allow integration with subsequent lab-on-chip components, mainly optical processes for further biological and chemical analysis.
The proposed prototype consists in an array of 9600 solid-state microelectrodes with nanometric tips. The fabrication process includes the patterning of a negative mold for the individual microelectrode tips, followed by an increase in height (for higher aspect-ratio and deeper penetration capability) through the addition of a Photoresist, filling of the mold with Silver through a novel Through-Silicon Electrodeposition process, and finally transferring the pattern to a Glass substrate with optical processing compatibility.
The end results demonstrates a proof-of-concept of the process feasibility and the multiple achievements in process engineering, although further studies and optimization are required in different areas of the project as to better understand the mechanics and principles behind some of the novel aspects of the processes. This thesis had the support of Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia under a Doctoral Scholarship -SFRH/BD/90121/201
The effects of product market reforms In Portugal: a more productive, more efficient and more resilient economy?
This paper assesses the short-term impact of product market deregulation in upstream sectors on the productivity of firms in downstream sectors (i.e. those firms using the output of the reformed sectors as inputs in their production process). Relying on a firm level database for the period 2004-2014 covering all Portuguese firms, we show that the most productive firms (those at the sectoral technological frontier) grasp short-run benefits from these reforms, which are then spread to all other firms via spillover mechanisms. In addition, reforms potentiate the exit of the least productive firms, improving the resource allocation in the economy. Finally, we show that the adoption of product market reforms in upstream sectors leads to a more resilient economy, better equipped to face adverse shocks
Customer valuation model: applied to a foodservice commodities supplier
In last few years, terms like customer centric organization; customer focused strategies; customer metrics and customer value assessment have became buzzwords in the organizations. Independently from which angle managers are grasping these concepts, a common denominator seems to accede that customers are probably the most valuable assets in a company.
However, most of costumer value assessments are confined to sales revenues analysis.
In this document, several customer value models are assessed, in order to evaluate which can be used as a metric and as a managerial tool, able be applied to market particularities of a foodservice food products supplier.
The author selected CLV model as the base model to assess customer values, adapting it to the presented case study. In addition to this model, it was developed a complementary scoring model to balance qualitatively the adapted CLV outputs.
The two models working together are the proposed solution to assess the case study customers’ value.
We find that increasing the annual infiation rate by 10 percentage points above the average rate in the U.S. would result in a fall in average productivity of roughly 1.3 percent. This decrease in productivity is not innocuous : it is responsible for about one half of the welfare cost of inflation
